Liver Biopsy

Liver Biopsy

A liver biopsy is when a small sample of tissue is taken from the liver, through a tiny hollow needle inserted directly into the liver, to help diagnose and monitor certain liver conditions. It is usually performed under a local anaesthetic and in most cases you will be able to return home the same day.

At the Princess Grace Hospital your biopsy will be performed by one of our team of hepatologists/radiologists who will give you a local anaesthetic. Sometimes the doctor will use ultrasound guidance, which is painless, to help locate the exact place to insert the needle.

A liver biopsy can help identify conditions such as Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B, as well as cirrhosis (liver scarring) and other disorders.
